5th INTERNATIONAL CHOREOGRAPHIC CAPTURES COMPETITION
DEADLINE: APRIL 30th, 2012

For the fifth time, JOINT ADVENTURES is inviting choreographers, dancers, film and (multi-)media artists to develop new aesthetic approaches and visual languages for choreography and film in a 60-second ad format in the CHOREOGRAPHIC CAPTURES context.

We are searching for works that operate choreographically with the film medium, react creatively towards movement, leave room for experimentation and initiate unusual aesthetic dialogues with the film audience: “Expanded Choreography”. The objective is to discover the endless choreographic possibilities within film – with, but also separated from the moving body in front of a camera, as well as in editing, rhythm, abstraction or animation.

All information required for participating in the competition is available at: www.choreooo.org.

Deadline is April 30th, 2012!

CHOREOGRAPHIC CAPTURES – choreooo.org

The CHOREOGRAPHIC CAPTURES art project and short-film competition was initiated under the motto “ART FOR THOSE WHO DIDN’T ASK FOR IT!” by JOINT ADVENTURES with support from the German Federal Cultural Foundation in 2008. The goal is as simple as it is ambitious: to use unconventional means to increase people’s awareness of the art forms of film, dance and choreography.

The project website has been just now newly designed and expanded into an interactive portal. Now you can register at www.choreooo.org as a member of the online community, upload your own art films, watch and evaluate other people’s clips or watch a bunch of high-qual dancefilms from our four competitions (shorts no longer than 60 seconds). The portal is meant to support the interaction between choreography, media art and film, and motivate people to creatively work with a medium of art. So make the jump with us, and check us out at www.choreooo.org

Nomadic Dance

Scottish dance artist, Dana MacPherson will dance from Dingle to Donegal, the West Coast of Ireland this August, covering approximately 600km in 4 weeks. The work in Ireland will culminate with a Dance Ireland Residency at DanceHouse, before performing the work in Germany at the festival Zietgenossicher Oper Berlin, and a residency at Glasgow’s Dance House, Scotland.

Dana will be joined on the road by a variety of artists; together they will develop a series of choreographic scores created from experimental exercises in perception and orientation. The scores will map moments of discovery read from the Irish landscape. Terrain and weather will be documented in the mediums of dance, sound, text, drawing, photography and film. Integral to the labs resource is local input of Irish history and culture. Recording and archiving people’s tales along the road will form the foundations of the labs cultural archive, an invaluable resource for our devised performance, Shifting States. Created on the road, Shifting States reflects upon how we perceive, orientate and relate to our local habitat and landscapes.

Nomadic Arts School
Nomadic Dance is working towards creating, The Nomadic Arts School, an organisation that takes resources of creative value to rural & urban global communities around the globe with emphasis to travel to refugee camps where knowledge of homeland is in danger of being lost. NUMBER
Welcome to share with us the work of NUMBER, a choreography based on algorithms, counting and moving humans in it’s latest development created in Helsinki with international and local artist, thinker and scholars.

Sat 26.2.2011 at 15:00
Zodiak – Center for New Dance, Studio C4
Cable Factory, Tallberginkatu 1 C 4th floor, Helsinki, Finland

info & facebook
The event starts with a short lecture about the work, followed by the choreography and ending in a shared discussion.

NUMBER is an on-going Choreographic Experiment for a group. The work started during choreographer Riikka Theresa Innanen’s (Fin) Artistic Residency at Daghdha Dance Company 2008-2009 and has been greatly influenced by her collaboration with the Irish mathematician Alexis Clancy and the discussions and experiments done with the participating dancers in the original research. Now this work will take new form in Helsinki C4 studio of Zodiak -Center for New Dance.

In NUMBER a “game” of simultaneously moving, counting and speaking introduces an alternative approach to the body-mind work within choreography. In this work we have started out engaging movement with simple calculations working towards more complex formulas, insisting the brain and the body to work equally radical.
This balancing act in motion reveals patterns of thought, ones genetic structure, intimate strategies of individual surviving, and oddly enough, revives the holistic human for us to witnesses. While Number also reveals a possibility of co-existance of individuals, supporting by mere sharing of a condition, we also ask the question what could the metaphors of thought for the future be.

We welcome the audience to join us to watch the waves with us – this time in human form – to tune in to the vibration created by dancers focusing in counting, speaking and moving, non-stop, and witnessing an event where Numbers changes the states of minds.
NUMBER choreographer Riikka Theresa Innanen

Before a number is a number, a number is a (quantum) wave.[Assertion mine.]

By putting an Úna sequence into the mind of a moving dancer, the wave can be re-instantiated in mind and body – the dancer becomes a “wave mimic”.

With a number of dancers, the dance floor can become an observable quantum field.

In a sense, it is a new type of fractal, where an Úna sequence (which is non linear governor in a fictional sense) is reiterated in a non-linear field (that is the coupled minds and bodies of the dancers).

The novelty of this fractal lies in the fact that not only is the governor non-linear – so to is the field upon which the fractal is generated.

SALVATORE LARUSSA DANCE THEATRE NYC SEASON 2010

New York, NY (October 19, 2010)- Salvatore LaRussa Dance Theatre returns for its NYC season at Merce Cunningham Studio, 55 Bethune Street, NYC, 10014, 11th Floor. The general public can reserve seats in advance by emailing rsvp@sldt.org. Pay at the door, cash only. Tickets are $20 general admission and $15 for students.

bound (World Premiere)- bound takes you through Salvatore’s imaginary world of chaotic night life. Obsessed with texting, dancers go in and out of useless chatter with their crush, who may be their next love interest or just the next quick hook up. On stage, mounds of balloons represent the exceeding amount of breath wasted in worthless conversations. The stage is converted into a cage where the bars are never too tight to hold anyone in; you are free to leave but you choose to stay, bound.

render (2008)- In render, self is extracted, restored and exhibited.
Dancers surrender to the journey and find themselves through the masses. The loss of love, spirituality and power are fulfilled through the exploration of ritual and ceremony. Help me to let go. Save me from falling. Who will be my savior? Guide me to a new life.

Dance New Amsterdam (DNA) presents GRRRlesque

Friday, October 22, Hosted and Curated by Honi Harlow

Curator’s Description
Come be tempted, tantalized and teased by the most enthralling GRRRls of the stage. They sing, they dance, they twirl and twist and lose quite a bit of clothing along the way. The notorious Honi Harlow hosts and curates this magical evening, with performances by Amber Ray, Bunny Love, Rose Wood, Calamity Chang, Miss Ekaterina, Jill Magilo, and Meghan Andrews.

Honi Harlow was nothing but a country girl with big glitter dreams. Her path was chosen for her at the age of 3 when she preformed for a family gathering her “I’m the Boom, I’m the Boom, I’m the Boom Boom Girl” number wearing only her sisters head bands, none of them on her head! Needles to say, her professional career was put on hold for a while, and her sister was pissed! It was a long and twisted road before she landed in New York and along the way she developed some serious skills: acting, singing, dancing and even choreographing. She has played such roles as Miss Julie on tour in Maribor, Slovenia, Queen Margaret in Lublin, Poland and Helen of Troy in Thessaloniki, Greece where she drank red wine and dance with the Gypsies late in to the night and ruined a great pair of DKNY shoes, but it was worth it!

Saturday, October 23, Hosted and Curated by Victoria Libertore aka Howling Vic

Curator’s Description
Turn off that flat screen TV, pull out the top hat and come to Late Nite @ DNA! GRRRlesque is all women, all-queer, all for you: music, performance art, burlesque, faux Liza Minnelli there’s-no-business-like-it entertainment. Saucy saxophones, hilarious hula hooping, rapping vixens and more will lure you into a world where no “real” housewives of any town can compete. Curated and hosted by Victoria Libertore with performances by DapperQ, Fetchin’ Gretchen, Janessa Clark/KILTERBOX, Julia Steele Allen, Kelley Sanford aka Kstar, Miss Saturn & The Tiptons Sax Quartet and Drums.

Victoria Libertore is an actress, writer, improv artist, emcee, curator and teacher. She has performed her work throughout NYC in venues such as BAX, Dixon Place, Joyce Soho & PS122 as well as in Boston, D.C., Montreal, Philadelphia, Provincetown and Toronto. She is the author of five solo shows including GIRL MEAT and “My Journey of Decay.” Libertore teaches performance and burlesque incorporating her original archetypal energy technique. She is the 2010 Artist Advisor for Brooklyn Arts Exchange and a new member on the board of New Dance Alliance. Libertore lives in Wallabout, Brooklyn where she also gives intuitive readings. www.howlingvic.com

Frequently Asked Questions
Daghdha Mentoring Programme in Dance and Choreography 2010/2011

WHAT IS THE MISSION, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DAGHDHA MENTORING PROGRAMME IN DANCE AND CHOREOGRAPHY (DMP)?
Daghdha Mentoring Programme in Choreography and Dance (DMP) provides a home, time and space, for independent artists to develop their own practice on a full-time basis. For 48 weeks the artists are integrated into a coordinated, curated and structured programme, with emphasis on flexibility and opportunity for independent, self-directed research. Set within the stunning surrounds of Daghdha Space, St. John¹s Church, Daghdha Dance Company proactively provides unique conditions for exchange, peer-learning, critical thinking and dialogue through the provision of workshops, lectures, discussions, informal presentations/feedback sessions and performances.
The legacy of the DMP is to enable former participants to survive as independent artists, whilst pursuing their own path of enquiry. Rather than following traditional forms of production the programme aims to encourage brave new practices in dance and choreography, allowing artistic practice to follow boldly where one’s ideas point to. The DMP aims to considerably contribute and enrich Irish dance culture by developing and supporting the participants through a culture of discourse, discipline and openness.

WHO IS IT FOR AND WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY TO THE PROGRAMME?
The DMP is primarily aimed at young professionals working in the field of choreography and dance who wish to develop their personal practice. Mature artists who feel the need to change direction in their current practice will also be considered. All participants need to be living in Ireland during the duration of the programme.

COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THE APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE DAGHDHA MENTORING PROGRAMME IN CHOREOGRAPHY AND DANCE?
The programme runs from 1st week of November to the last working day in September the following year. Application forms are downloadable from Daghdha’s website (www.daghdha.ie) and should be submitted before the annual deadline published online, however Daghdha may consider applications received during the year. The selection committee reviews the applications and short-lists candidates for interviews. Offers for places are made on the strength and merit of a prospective participant’s written application, documentation of previous work, a proven track record of self-directed research and/or practice and following interview, on an applicant’s perceived suitability for the overall programme.

WHAT ARE DAGHDHA’S EXPECTATIONS OF THE PARTICIPANTS? Daghdha is an innovative production company in dance and choreography with beautiful resources that reflect our ethos and vision of producing dance in open and communal, yet focused and thorough manner. Participants of the programme are expected to contribute to the quality and life of the artistic community, feeding their own knowledge into the group (via the provision of workshops, morning class, roundtables, lectures, etc.) and/or engagement with the Limerick community through original projects (festivals, partnerships and performances). Daghdha also encourages participants to proactively participate in the Irish dance scene, through exchanges with
other organisations and personal initiatives.

IS THERE A ‘PROGRAMME-STRUCTURE’ IN PLACE WITHIN THE DMP¹S CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK? IF YES, PLEASE PROVIDE DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS STRUCTURE FUNCTIONS.
The Daghdha Mentoring Programme in Choreography and Dance activities are organised around various fields of engagements (60% self directed and 40% directed), which form the programme structure. Such fields include:
Choreography for Dance, Dance Performance Practice, Media Production, Dramaturgy, Choreographic Studies, Dance and Repertoire Training and Social Choreography. Workshops are provided by Daghdha’s artistic team and guest artists chosen by the mentors partly in consultation with the DMP participants. The resident artists are required to engage in self-directed learning through independent research, production and rehearsal for their own performances through research, group or peer learning. Although there is a clear structure to the programme, it does not mirror academic nor vocational training courses, but is primarily a self-directed framework for research and production, whereby exposure to other ideas and methods is offered through structured activities.

COULD YOU EXPLAIN ATTENDANCE RULES AND REGULATIONS IN DETAIL?
A 90% attendance rate is mandatory in order to qualify for continued participation in the DMP. Participants are required to commit themselves fulltime to the DMP in order to receive monthly financial support. All participants are required to regularly attend one weekly group meeting or send apologies if absent in advance.

WHAT IS THE AMOUNT OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT AVAILABLE TO DMP PARTICIPANTS?
Daghdha will contribute to each participant’s living costs with 900 EUR a month. Daghdha will also provide a small travel and training allowance for networking and performance events. Daghdha cannot provide additional production budgets, but supports participants to source money outside the framework of the DMP through administrative and artistic advice and guidance.

WHERE DO DMP ACTIVITIES TAKE PLACE?
The programme takes place, primarily, in two beautifully restored historic buildings in John’s Square in Limerick’s city centre: Daghdha Space, an impressive performance and exhibition space housed in a former church, and the nearby Daghdha offices and dance studio, home to the former Limerick City Museum. Participants do have 24 hours access to Daghdha Space and occasional access to the dance studio located in office building.

HOW IS THE USE OF THE DAGHDHA SPACE COORDINATED AND ORGANISED?
Daghdha Space is self-regulated via an ‘Open Studio’ format through the use of the large blackboard. In conjunction with regularly scheduled events or classes, the ‘Open Studio’ is the format used to define and schedule the day-to-day use of the Daghdha Space by all its various users: company members, DMP participants and resident artists alike.

HOW IS THE DMP PROGRAMME SCHEDULE ORGANISED AND DELIVERED TO THE DMP PARTICIPANTS?
Daghdha staff sets the overall DMP schedule. Day-to-day activities are developed in regular meetings between Daghdha staff and the participants in a democratic manner.

HOW DO THE MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE DMP PROGRAMME FRAMEWORK WORK?
Mentoring relationships on the DMP are generally formulated during and after January, while informal mentoring may take place throughout the year (in the form of unscheduled meetings, spontaneous discussion and during participation in company performances and events). Formal mentoring takes place up to 4 times per year and is arranged by appointment between the mentees (DMP participants) and mentors (Daghdha staff or Daghdha¹s regular guest artists).

WHO ARE THE MENTORS?
Formal mentors of the 2010/2011 programme will be Michael Klien, Phd (Artistic Director, Daghdha), Bush Hartshorn (Co-ordinator, Daghdha; qualified personal coach and vastly experienced artistic producer) and Steve Valk (Dramaturge, Daghdha; former head-dramaturge Ballet Frankfurt).

WHAT IS THE RELATION BETWEEN DAGHDHA AND THE DMP?
Daghdha’s mission is to produce choreography and dance that illustrates the role, value and legacy of research, discourse, and artistic process. The DMP presents a major strand of this mission with projects and productions of the Artistic Director forming another. All strands of the company, including the DMP, are working towards a common goal, to develop dance and choreography to a level of excellence for traditional and non-traditional formats including stages, galleries and other surfaces, which engage the perception, imagination and experience of both the artists and the audiences (locally, nationally and internationally).

THINKING, TALKING, WRITING DANCE

Dance Ireland wishes to support a community of writers who engage in ideas about their own artistic practice, and the creative work of others across a wide range of disciplines. Jeffrey Gormly, editor of choreograph.net, will bring his experience as writer, dramaturge, editor and cultural producer to a process of discovering while addressing the needs of creative producers.

29 January 12 – 4pm
26 February 12 – 4pm
26 March 12 – 4pm

The aim of the pilot is to identify and address the needs of creative artists around writing. It is acknowledged that there are three general aspects to the use of writing in artistic professional practice and development:

• Writing as process: use of notebooks, reading and research as part of the creation of artistic material;
• Writing as interface: creation of texts for publicity, marketing, and artistic proposals;
• Discursive practices as a means of developing artistic ‘working friendships’, community and eliciting feedback: blogging, article writing, dialogical and discursive formats.

This pilot will involve raw thinking and talking, note-taking, discussion, and development of a critical, associative field of ideas relating to the particular thoughts and ideas occupying each participant’s mind. The program also incorporates space/time for free dance as an essential and constructive part of an embodied thinking process. The final session of the workshop will include publishing texts and images produced by the participants in a raw thinking thread on choreograph.net, for those happy to do so.

Open to all creative artists interested in exploring and developing their writing practice; €10 per workshop or sign-up for all three and pay €25. As places are limited, please reserve your place by calling 01 855 8800 or email reception@danceireland.ie.

YOUTH BALLET WEST AUDITIONS
for the 2009/10 season

27 August 2009 at 11AM
Dance Academy’s studios in Briarhill
Those interested in auditioning contact: info@youthballetwest.ie.

Youth Ballet West (YBW) is a non-profit organisation offering young dancers in the west of Ireland the opportunity to audition for, and perform in professionally choreographed ballets of the highest standard while they continue to train with their own teachers.

By providing the opportunity for young dancers to gain performance experience, train with top-class teachers, work with acclaimed choreographers and work closely with professional dancers we aim to lead these young dancers to fully develop their artistic potential.

Membership of Youth Ballet West is free to those dancers selected at audition.

What we have been up to:
Last Monday saw the Youth Ballet West performers take the streets of Galway in a fund raising extravaganza that helped them raise over a thousand euro for the company. The dancers performed six pieces, drawing an audience of over a thousand people throughout the day.

Youth Ballet West are commencing work on a new piece entitled The Celebration. The company are delighted to have acclaimed international choreographer Cathy Sharp, creating this piece. The work will highlight the young dancer’s energy and youth, while providing a new and inspiring outlet for their technical prowess and abilities. YBW has been supported by The Arts Council’s Commissions Awards Scheme.

The company have also been busy all summer. In May, they were delighted to perform Ballet Egyptian, to large crowds at the hugely successful Volvo Ocean Race. In July they took part in The Dublin Youth Dance Festival in Dun Laoghaire and also performed a new piece by Judith Sibley in collaboration with Noeline Kavanagh for the Galway Arts Festival’s Macnas Parade.

Research: computer program for choreographers

My name is Jennifer Pierce.
I am a Master’s student at Waseda University’s Graduate School of Global Information and Telecommunication Studies in Tokyo, Japan.
Prior to moving to Japan, I studied art history, dance, and photography in the United States.

I am in the beginning stages of preparing for my Master’s thesis which will focus on intermedia dance, specifically interdisciplinary choreography. It is my tentative goal to collaborate with computer scientists in my school to create a computer program designed for choreographers.

In order to better understand the needs and processes of choreographers I have prepared a questionnaire. My questions are very general although my curiosity is great so any creative feedback would be very much appreciated!
